Chairman of Libyan presidential council discusses with AU Commission chairman historic relations between Libya and AU

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The chairman of the Libyan presidential council, Mohamed al-Manfi, Monday held talks here with the chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki, and his delegation on the historic relations between Libya and the African continental body.

In a statement, the press office of the chairman of the Libyan presidential council indicated that Mr al-Manfi underlined "the importance of the role of the African commission to reach stability in Libya, and the role it could play in the political process".

He also stressed the importance of the reopening of the office of the African Union Commission in Libya to strengthen their cooperation.

Mr Faki reaffirmed the support of the AU Commission for Libya at all levels, particularly to fight against the phenomenon of illegal migration and reach global national reconciliation in the country.

He also underlined the support of the African Union for the presidential council in the establishment of stability and the success of the political process, as well as the achievement of elections within the set deadlines.

The African Union (AU) has strongly engaged over the past few years in the search for political solution in Libya through the establishment of a high committee on Libya chaired by Congo with six other countries, and aiming to promote consensus between Libyan stakeholders within the framework of an African mediation.

An action plan for solution in Libya focusing on the holding of a reconciliation conference under the aegis of the African Union and general elections was elaborated by the continental organisation, but interference by foreign powers in that North African country fuelled the tension and marginalized the African mediation.

Observers estimated that the AU could contribute to the control of ceasefire, after the adoption of a resolution by the UN Security Council to send international observers.
