Chad to help Sudan in its peace process

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - President Idris Deby of Chad has pledged to help the Sudanese peace talks currently underway in South Sudan, under the auspices of President Salva Kiir and the umbrella of the African Union.

According to a communique issued on Monday in Ndjamena, “Chad has expressed its willingness to give its full support to the negotiations underway between the various stakeholders.”

The communique was issued at the end of a one-day official visit to Ndjamena by Sudan’s Prime Minister Abdallah Hamdouk at the invitation of President Debby.

The two sides talked about bilateral relations, current developments in the Sudan and the peace process, besides security matters of mutual concern.

The Prime Minister of Sudan "warmly thanked and praised the leadership of  President Déby for the efforts made to seek and consolidate peace and security in Sudan,” it stressed

Also, the joint communique said Deby and Hamdouk stressed the urgent need to further strengthen the role of the Chad-Sudan Joint Force in securing the common border and the movement of people and goods between the two countries.

“To this end, particular emphasis has been placed on the exchange of information and intelligence between the security services of the two countries as well as judicial cooperation. Likewise, both parties agree on the need to take strong and consistent action to contain irregular immigration and the arms trade.”

The two sides have also agreed to help land-locked Chad better use Sudanese sea port to import commodities and goods to Ndjamena via railway and road.

“The two sides stressed the urgent need to materialize as quickly as possible the Chad-Sudan railway project and the road infrastructure which facilitate economic and commercial transactions.”

Khartoum and Ndjamena have underlined “the need to take action in order to effectively combat fraud and smuggling which are damaging to the development of their economic exchanges”.
