Cape Town to host major motor racing event in 2023

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – The fifth round of the Formula E race will be held in Cape Town for the first time next year.

Organisers have confirmed that the global event will take place on 25 February and will be staged around the Cape Town Stadium, the venue of the 2010 World Cup semi-final between the Netherlands and Uruguay.

Formula E received “World Championship” status in 2020 and the 2022/23 season will visit four continents and 12 major global cities.

“This exciting international event will put Cape Town firmly on the global racing circuit, showcasing the city to audiences around the world,” said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

Cape Town has long been regarded as a possible venue for Formula One racing, but Johannesburg’s Kyalami race track has been earmarked for the Grand Prix calendar in the near future. South Africa last hosted a Formula One Grand Prix in 1993.
