Cape Town to host 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Cape Town has been named as the host city for the 2022 Rugby World Cup Sevens.

The announcement was made in Tokyo on Tuesday ahead of the Rugby World Cup Final where South Africa will play England on Saturday.

The World Rugby Council decided that Cape Town is the most suitable host for the eighth edition of the event. It will be the first time the event is hosted on the African continent.

A record of 11 countries – Argentina, Cayman Islands, France, Germany, India, Jamaica, Malaysia, Qatar, Scotland, South Africa and Tunisia – had expressed interest in hosting the massive tournament which will rake in hundreds of millions of dollars.

World Rugby chairman Sir Bill Beaumont said his committee was impressed with South Africa’s detailed and comprehensive bid.

PANA reports that the event will be held at the Cape Town Stadium which was constructed to host one of the 2010 FIFA World Cup semi-finals.

Next year, the stadium will be the venue for the highest attendance tennis match in history.

All 47,000 tickets have been sold out for the much-anticipated Roger Federer versus Rafael Nadal “Match in Africa” on 7 February, 2020 which will help raise funds for educational programmes in Africa.

Organisers have also confirmed there will be a warm-up celebrity doubles match pitting Federer and billionaire Bill Gates against Nadal and top South African comedian Trevor Noah.
