Cameroon: UN alarmed by reported deaths following Paul Biya's re-election
New York, US (PANA) - The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights said on Thursday it was "deeply concerned" by reports of several deaths during protests that followed the announcement of the results of the October 12 presidential election in Cameroon.
The UN agency urges authorities to open "swift, impartial, and effective investigations" into all cases of election violence, including the "excessive or disproportionate" use of force, and to bring the perpetrators to justice. It also insists on "the right to a fair trial and due process for anyone arrested".
High Commissioner Volker Türk calls on security forces to refrain from the use of lethal force and urges protesters to express their discontent peacefully. "Political leaders and their supporters must refrain from violence and hate speech," he stressed in a statement.
Rallies have broken out in several cities across the country to contest the re-election of President Paul Biya, 92, who has been in power since 1982, declared the winner "without surprise" with 53.66% of the vote, according to official results announced Monday by the Constitutional Council.
Following the post-election violence, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed his "deep concern" about the loss of life and injuries among both protesters and security forces. He called for a "thorough and independent investigation" into the incidents, urging all political actors to exercise restraint, reject violence, and banish hate speech.
The UN chief called on Cameroonian authorities to guarantee “a safe and secure environment where the rights of all citizens are protected” and to ensure that due process is followed for those arrested. He further advocated for “inclusive dialogue” to address grievances and preserve national unity.
“All disputes must be resolved through legal and peaceful means,” he insisted, reaffirming the United Nations’ commitment to supporting peace and sustainable development in Cameroon.
