Cameroon: Cameroonians urged to consume more cocoa and coffee
Douala, Cameroon (PANA) – The inter-professional cocoa and coffee council (CICC) of Cameroon is urging the citizens to consume more cocoa and coffee.
At the moment, less than 5% of cocoa and coffee produced is consumed in the country and CICC wants this to jump to at least 50% of national production.
“Hardly 5% of the national cocoa and coffee produced in Cameroon is consumed by Cameroonians, while production rises every year by 2%,” the executive secretary of CICC, Omer Gatien Malédy, said on Tuesday.
He expressed regret that it was westerners who consumed Cameroonian coffee.
To encourage Cameroonians to consume the local cocoa and coffee, Cameroon has hosted the second edition of the international coffee festival (FESTICOFFEE 2014) where some 30,000 litres of coffee were consumed for free, according to official figures.
FESTICOFFEE 2014, which was held in several African cities on the theme: "Coffee, the resumption", had among other objectives to get participants to consume 500,000 cups of Cameroonian coffee.
