Cairo hosts talks on Libyan-Egyptian relations, latest developments in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Libyan minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed Taher Siala, Tuesday met with his Egyptian counterpart, Sameh Shoukri, on bilateral relations between the two countries and the latest developments in Libya.

A statement issued by the Libyan ministry of Foreign Affairs said "the two ministers held talks on the sidelines of the extraordinary summit of the Council of Arab League ministers".

It said "the Egyptian minister of foreign affairs presented his thanks for the important materialization of the choice of the new Executive Authority, hoping that this will be a stage through which Libya will restore its status and position in response to the aspirations of the Libyan people to security, stability and prosperity".

The two parties underlined the importance to strengthen the bilateral relations in different domains, the statement said, adding that to attain this goal, Mr Choukri underlined the imminent opening of the Egyptian embassy in Tripoli to contribute to activate the mechanisms of the bilateral cooperation and the advancement of the relations between the two countries.

In addition, the Libyan minister of Foreign Affairs discussed with the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, the new most remarkable developments of the situation in Libya and the latest developments in the political process.

The Secretary-General presented his congratulations over the choice of the new Executive Authority, wishing the National Unity Government full success in its mission during the preparations for the elections scheduled for 24 December.  

The meeting was also an opportunity to share views on the evolution of the joint Arab action and the ways and means to strengthen the role of the League of Arab States in handling Arab crises and problems.   

In addition, Siala met with Division General Abbas Kamel, director of the Egyptian intelligence services, while in Cairo to attend the meetings of the extraordinary sessions of the Council of Arab League at the ministerial level.

The meeting enabled the participants to examine the means to succeed in the political process and the mechanism of support for the outcomes of the Libyan political Dialogue hosted in Geneva.

The statement said Mr. Kamel expressed the support of Cairo for the new Executive Authority in Libya, wishing it success in meeting the demands of the dialogue and the organisation of the elections due on 24 December, this year.
