COMESA chief, Kenya sports minister named for Africa influential woman award

 

Nairoi, Kenya (PANA)  - COMESA Secretary General Chileshe Kapwepwe has been named among 100 Most Influential African Women for the year 2020, an official source said here Thursday.

The Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) is a 21-member African regional trading block with its headquarters in Lusaka, Zambia.

Also named for the award is Kenya's Sports, Culture and Heritage Cabinet Secretary, Amina Mohammed.

In the past, Mohammed was the foreign affairs and later education cabinet secretary.

The Award is given by Avance Media, a leading African Public Relations and Rating Firm.

It is a recognition for women who are leading various initiatives across the continent and seeks to present them as role models for the younger generation.

Criteria for selection includes excellence in leadership and performance, personal accomplishment and commitments.

It also includes sharing knowledge, breaking the status quo and being an accomplished African woman.

Kapwepwe, a Zambian, is the first female to be appointed secretary general of COMESA in its 26 years of existence.

Among those picked for the award are Agnes Kalibata, Chief  Executive Officer, Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa; Amani Abou-Zeid (Dr),Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy, African Union; Angelique Kidjo, musician (Benin); Antoinette Sayeh, Deputy Managing Director, IMF; Bajabulile Swazi Tshabalala, Vice President, Chief Finance Officer, African Development Bank.

The others are Dorothy Tembo, Acting Executive Director, International Trade Centre; Lydia Nsekera (Burundi), Member, International Olympic Committee; Matshidiso  WHO; Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka (Dr, South Africa)-Executive Director, UN Women; Yemi Alade (Nigeria)-musician; Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, Mayor, Freetown100; and Zainab Shamsuna Ahmed, Minister, Finance (Niria).
