Burundi minister slams Kenya airways for suspending flights to Bujumbura
Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) - Burundian Minister of Transport, Public Works and Infrastructure, Jean Bosco Ntunzwenimana, on Saturday expressed sadness following the announcement by Kenyan civil aviation company, "Kenya Airways", that it is suspending flights to Bujumbura, the Burundian capital, as from 11 November, 2018, "for administrative reasons".
Burundi does not have its own national airline and its citizens travel mainly with Kenya Airways, Ethiopian Airlines, RwandAir, SN Brussels and, since 30 August, Air Tanzania.
A press statement from the Kenya Airways indicates that its daily flights to Bujumbura will be taken over by a Kenyan private company, "Jumbo-jet", which is already serving the Great Lakes Region.
According to the minister, "The dispute involves Jumbo-jet which began to operate the link with Burundi without waiting for a response from the Burundian civil aviation authorities."
"One wonders then what links exist between the two companies so that Kenya Airways feels obliged to unilaterally suspend its flights to Bujumbura," he asked.
This is not the first time Kenya Airways will suspend flights to Burundi. Last August, the company temporarily suspended night flights to Bujumbura, without giving reasons.
