Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) - Burundi's National Assembly on Tuesday approved the candidacies for the posts of Prime Minister and Vice-President in the future Burundian government.

The candidates are the Commissioner-General of Police, Alain Guillaume Bunyoni, 48, for Prime Minister and Prospère Bazombanza, 60, Vice President, PANA learned from a parliamentary source.

General Bunyoni is the outgoing Minister of Public Security and Natural Disaster Prevention and belongs to the ruling National Council for the Defence of Democracy/Forces for the Defence of Democracy (CNDD-FDD).

The future Vice-President of the Republic, from the ranks of the Unity for National Progress (UPRONA, formerly the single party), has had to hold the same position between 2014 and 2015.

A new President of the Republic, retired General Evariste Ndayishimiye, was elected on 20 May and was sworn in last Thursday for a seven-year term, renewable once, according to the country's constitution.

The Vice-President of the Republic and the Prime Minister have yet to be appointed by decree and sworn into office, according to legal procedures.

At the end of these procedures, the Prime Minister will propose a new government to the President of the Republic, who is the constitutional head of state.

The sitting president, Pierre Nkurunziza, died on 8 June, officially of cardiac arrest.

The national funeral of the late Burundian president is scheduled for next Friday in Gitega, Burundi's new political capital.
