Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - Burkinabe President Captain Ibrahim Traoré has pardoned 963 prisoners in an amnesty announced on Thursday.
The government said after the cabinet meeting that 372 convicted prisoners will have the total remission of the remainder of their sentences, 590 will benefit from a partial remission of sentences ranging from 3 to 12 months while one life sentence has been communuted.
According to the Council of Ministers, these beneficiaries were chosen according to age, offence, precarious state of health or interest in work in agricultural production units, workshops and community work.
In addition, emphasis was also placed on convicts who had applied for their sentences to be commuted to community service (TIG).
The government explained that these measures of pardon or sentence reduction are part of a humanitarian approach aimed at offering a second chance to convicted persons who have shown tangible efforts towards rehabilitation.
