Burkina Faso: Women’s contribution to peace and social cohesion, focus at 8 March celebration

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) – Burkina Faso will Thursday celebrate the 162nd international women’s day, under the theme ‘’women’s contribution to Burkina Faso of security, peace and social cohesion’’, according to official sources.

The city of Koupela, in the east of the country, will host the official ceremony of the day, placed under the sponsorship of Burkina Faso’s First Lady, Sika Kaboré.

The day, 8 March, is dedicated as the day of the recognition of women’s rights and is presented as the ideal opportunity to review the living conditions of women.

In Burkina Faso, the commemoration is organised under the aegis of the ministry in charge of Women, through the specific theme corresponding to a national concern to enable a guidance of thinking and action.

The choice of this year’s theme ‘’Women’s contribution to the edification of a Burkina Faso of security, peace and social cohesion’’ justifies itself with the fact that Burkina Faso, like other countries of the sub-region, is the theatre of terrorist attacks that shake the country’s stability, said the minister of Women, Laurence Marchal, in a declaration.

‘’Taking into account the negative consequences of the security crises on women, the different strategies for the Sahel region emphasized the essential aspect of gender equality.

Also, those strategies advocate the effective participation of women in the process of prevention and fight against extremism, she added.

The minister said that women play intermediary role in conflicts by facilitating communication and negotiations and are ‘’true links between communities and represent artisans of peace within families and the society’’.

They play key role in the resolution of conflicts and are presented as indispensable actors to detect and correct within them the first signs of radicalization and extremism in their living environment and understand the factors that can influence the choices of their children, she said.

Through the theme, the government will highlight the role and place of women in the peacekeeping process in Burkina Faso.
