Burkina Faso: 27 soldiers, 10 civilians killed on 26 September in ambush of humanitarian convoy in the Sahel (Update)

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso (PANA) - The Burkinabe army announced on Wednesday the ambush on 26 September against a convoy carrying supplies for the town of Djibo in the Sahel region of Burkina Faso left 37 people dead, including 27 soldiers, according to latest reports.

The army statement said that following the terrorist attack on a supply convoy near the locality of Gaskindé (Soum Province, Sahel region) on 26 September 2022, the combing and search operations carried out revealed the death of 10 civilians and 27 soldiers, while 29 others, including 21 soldiers, seven civilians and one VDP were wounded, with three others still missing amid significant material damage.

The Chief of the General Staff of the Armed Forces paid tribute to the memory of the missing and wished the injured a speedy recovery.

He reiterated the commitment of the National Armed Forces to continue the fight to reconquer the areas occupied by terrorist groups.

The provisional toll of this attack, which was communicated by the former authorities, was 11 soldiers killed and about 550 civilians missing.

On Tuesday, the army announced that the death toll was 27 soldiers. Lieutenant Colonel Paul Henri Sandaogo Damiba, who was overthrown on Friday by a group of young soldiers led by Captain Ibrahim Traore, said in a video announcing his resignation on Monday that the attack was used as a pretext by soldiers close to him to stage a coup.
