Botswana Police Service teams up with women in media to fight gender-based violence

Gaborone, Botswana (PANA) - The Botswana Police Services (BPS) have  joined forces with Women in Media in a fight against Gender-Based Violence in Botswana.

Parents have been called on to teach their boy child about issues of Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in order for them to be abreast with it.

Speaking at GBV campaign in Letlhakane, 498.6 kilometers from the capital, Gaborone, on Monday, 25 Nov. 2019, the Officer Commanding No. 8 District, Senior Superintendent Sarah Gabathuse, said they are experiencing an increase in issues of gender-based violence and therefore found it fit and necessary to partner with members of the media in order to help sensitize the public of Boteti about GBV issues.

She further said the increase in GBV cases are partly due to the fact that they are in an area where people throng the area in search of jobs in mine industry and some idle on the streets drinking alcohol and drugs and later be involved in the misfortunes of violence.

Lame Chaba, a Crime Journalist at the local Yarona fm Radio Station, who was one of the organizers of the match, highlighted that they as media have a powerful role to play in addressing issues of GBV against women and children and are often in a position to shift the public opinion.

She further said the aim of the initiative is to strengthen the journalistic coverage of GBV issues.

Chaba also urged all stakeholders to come forth and assists in the prevention of gender-based violence in all spheres of society and help protect women and girl child in every way possible from violence.

The event was attended by a number of stakeholders amongst them being Men Sector from Letlhakane, Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS (Bonela) and African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP).

ACHAP was established as a public-private community development partnership in 2000 to enhance and support Botswana’s HIV & AIDS response.

Using a comprehensive approach, ACHAP has successfully supported HIV prevention, care and treatment in Botswana for more than 14 years with remarkable results.

The Botswana Network on Ethics, Law and HIV/AIDS is a non-governmental organisation committed to integrating an ethical, legal and human rights approach into Botswana’s response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
