Barrow names Gambia’s conference center after ex-President Jawara

Banjul, Gambia (PANA)  -  President Adama Barrow Monday named Gambia’s newly built International Conference Centre (ICC) after the late President Dawda K Jawara who died last August.

“The Ministry of Transport, Works, and Infrastructure informs the public that Barrow has graciously named the conference centre as: ‘The Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara International Conference Centre’, in honour of the towering legacy of the late former president,” a statement from the government obtained by PANA said.

Meanwhile, the government has also announced that the conference centre, situated along the coastal tourist resort of Bijilo, which was under construction, is now completed.

“President Barrow will inaugurate the building on 11th January 2020 at 10:00 a.m,” the press release added.

The conference center is a 50-million-US dollar state of the art facility which is part of Gambian government’s contribution to the hosting of the 2022 summit of the Organization of  Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

The complex has a plenary hall with a capacity of 1,031 persons on two floors with other facilities like four thematic meeting rooms with 180 seating capacity, 11 bilateral meeting rooms with 32 seats, 10 office spaces, four press rooms, and five lounges among other facilities.

Gambia's first President Sir Dawda Kairaba Jawara was laid to rest after thousands of Gambians, diplomats and friends of the tiny West African country paid their last respect to the man referred to as “the father of the nation” in August, 2019.

Jawara, aged 95, who was also the country’s first prime minister, led the Gambia to independence from British colonial rule in 1965 and ruled the tiny West African nation for 29 years before being overthrown in a bloodless coup led by Yahya Jammeh in July 1994.
