Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The 18th Summit of Heads of State and Government of the Organization for the Development of the Senegal River (OMVS), composed of Guinea, Mali, Mauritania and Senegal, opens on Saturday in Bamako, the Malian capital.

According to officials, the work will focus on the development of the basin's energy resources, development of an integrated transport system based on river navigation, preservation of water resources and the environment, and support to local development (fishing, drinking water supply, irrigated agriculture).

The Summit is preceded by the 72nd session of the Council of Ministers of the sub-regional organization, which opened on Thursday in Bamako to prepare for Saturday's meeting of heads of state.

Established in March 1972, OMVS is an inter-state organization dedicated to fostering integrated and coordinated development of the river basin.

To this end, states along the Senegal River are jointly conducting a multi-sector and integrated development programme based on the control and rational management of water resources.
