At least 11 people killed in Burundi by attackers from DR Congo

Bujumbura, Burundi (PANA) - At least 11 people were killed in southern Burundi between August 23 to 24 by armed individuals from neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), state radio reported on Wednesday, citing local administrative sources.

The 11 victims were villagers from Rumonge, a Burundian province on the coast of Lake Tanganyika on the border with DRC.

The attackers forced villagers to carry looted goods before executing them as they retreated, said Rumonge governor, Consolateur Nitunga.

The defense and security forces have still not communicated on this attack, widely carried by social networks for three days.

The socio-political climate of the country has still not fully settled since the previous general elections ended controversially and punctuated by violence, including an attempted military coup in 2015, observers noted.
