Army seals area leading to rebellion in Khartoum

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA)  - The Sudanese army and the rapid support forces, both known as the Regular Forces, Tuesday moved armoured vehicles and heavy guns to the area adjacent to Kafouri where an unspecified number of disgruntled security elements have taken refuge, eyewitness told PANA here.

Roads, bridges and alleys leading to the area were sealed off before public transportation and movements around the area were restricted since Tuesday afternoon.

While the government is saying the situation has been contained, and that people should not worry, eyewitness say the military buildup continues around the area.

The official spokesman for the government, Faisal Mohamed Salih, read a statement by the council of ministers, on the insurgency blasting it as “rebellion” by some unit in some areas in Khartoum objecting the financial rewards assigned to them by the concerned authorities after demobilization.

The spokesmen said some units of the Operation Service barricaded streets in Khartoum state and “showed bullets in the air” as a means of protest.

The statement revealed that the incidents occurred in Kafouri in Khartoum North and Soba in Khartoum and at the operation service headquarters east of Khartoum airport; all in down town Khartoum, while in El Obied, some 750 km west of the national capital, there was a limited activity.

El obied is adjacent to the area of petroleum production in west Kordufan and near the borders with south Sudan. The same operation units are guarding the oil production, mostly in western Sudan, after the south seceded in 2011.
