Archbishop Tutu readmitted to hospital

Cape Town, South Africa (PANA) – Nobel Peace Prize laureate Archbishop Desmond Tutu is being treated for an unidentified infection at a Cape Town hospital.

The liberation hero, who has been hospitalised several times over the past few years, is battling with poor health.

He suffered from tuberculosis as a child and has had a long struggle with prostate cancer

Archbishop Thabo Makgoba, who visited Tutu on Wednesday night, said he is “lucid and engaging”. “He said he is as good as he can be for an 88-year-old, especially in view of his ill-health in childhood,” the cleric said, adding that they said the Lord’s Prayer together.

Tutu won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984 for his non-violent opposition to the apartheid regime in South Africa. He is widely credited for the role he played in steering South Africa away from a full-blown race war and securing the release of Nelson Mandela from prison.
