Arab League welcomes agreement on constitutional declaration in Sudan

Cairo, Egypt (PANA) - The League of Arab States has welcomed the agreement between the Opposition Alliance for Freedom and Change (ALC) and the Sudan Transitional Military Council (TMC) on the constitutional declaration, inaugurating a new period for the transitional government.
 

The agreement is likely to launch, after the necessary signatures, a new and important step in accordance with the aspiration of the Sudanese people for a civil and democratic administration capable of achieving peace throughout the country, according to reliable source close to the General Secretariat of the Arab League.
 

The constitutional declaration defines the powers of the Sovereignty Council, the Prime Minister and the Legislative Council during the transitional period.
 

It also addresses the affiliation of security and military organs, as well as electoral commissions for borders and peace.
 

The Arab League has reiterated its commitment to remain alongside all the actors in the Sudanese transition that have been the subject of consensus in order to contribute to the achievement of the aspiration of the Sudanese people for peace, security and stability, of democracy and inclusive development, which will undoubtedly have an impact on peace and stability in the Arab world.
 

A Spokesman for the Opposition Alliance for Freedom and Change, Madani Abas Madani, said on Saturday that the constitutional declaration agreed by both sides provides for a parliamentary civil power that gives the executive broad powers. 
 

Addressing a press conference, Madani said that achieving peace in the country is the most important priority of the transition.
 

"All points related to the constitutional declaration have been dealt with," he said, adding that the declaration will be signed after it is finalized on Sunday.
 

He said that "the Cabinet will be composed of up to 20 ministers," adding that 67 percent of the members of the Legislative Council will be chosen by the Alliance for Freedom and Change.
