Arab League reaffirms rejection of interventions by foreign countries and attachment to unity of Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA)  -  The council of the Arab League, at its extraordinary delegates meeting in Cairo, Egypt, Tuesday rejected foreign military interventions in Libya, reiterating its attachment.

Turkey is preparing to implement the memoranda of understanding signed on November 27 on the delimitation of maritime areas and security cooperation under which Ankara will provide military support to Tripoli.

In a resolution released at the end of the meeting, delegates from Arab League member-countries affirmed “their commitment to the unity, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Libya and rejection of all external interference of any kind, as well as support for the political process by the full implementation of the Skhirat Agreement signed in December 2015 as the only reference for the settlement in Libya”.

They stressed the importance of involving neighboring countries in international efforts to help Libyans resolve their crisis.

The council of the Arab League, in its decision taken at the meeting convened at the request of Egypt, declared itself  “gravely concerned by the military escalation which exacerbates the crisis in Libya and threatens security and stability from the Mediterranean region and neighboring countries”, stressing "the need to end the military conflict and that a political solution is the only way to restore security and stability in Libya and to eliminate terrorism".

Armed clashes have been continuing since April 4 after the military offensive launched by the Libyan national army based in the East led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar against Tripoli to take control and overthrow the government of national accord recognized by the international community.

The Arab League council resolution also stressed "the danger for any Libyan party to take unilateral measures which contradict the letter and spirit of the Libyan Political Agreement and the relevant international resolutions in a manner which allows for intervention of foreign military personnel, in a way that contributes to the escalation and prolongation of the conflict in Libya and the Mediterranean region”.

The delegates also asked the secretary general of the League of Arab States "to establish contacts at the highest level with all the international parties concerned by the Libyan crisis in order to harmonize positive and coordinated positions aimed at resolving the crisis and supporting the efforts of the UN envoy emanating from the Berlin process to launch economic and security tracks in the context of the search for a sincere Libyan-Libyan solution to the crisis and to submit periodic reports to the League Council for monitoring the implementation of this decision”.

The Berlin International Conference which will bring together, in the second half of next January, the major powers and members of the Security Council and of the countries involved in the Libyan crisis, aims to adopt a ceasefire with a view to promoting the resumption of the political process as a prelude to an agreement between Libyans.

Among the other objectives of this meeting, the cessation of the flow of arms which feeds the current conflict around Tripoli through the tightening of the embargo and the restriction of interference from foreign countries.
