Arab League calls on Libyan parties to cooperate with new UN Envoy for Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The General Secretariat of the League of Arab States has welcomed the appointment of Senegalese Abdoulaye Bathily as the new Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), calling on the Libyan parties to cooperate with him and support his mission.

The Secretary General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, expressed the hope that the next stage will be marked by more cooperation and coordination between the League and the UN in order to support efforts to resolve the political problem.

He said the pan-Arab organisation is confident that Mr Bathily will continue the efforts undertaken by the UN to get Libya out of the political impasse by establishing an agreed constitutional and legal basis on which to hold the expected national elections.

For its part, the European Union (EU) has also welcomed the appointment of Bathily saying, "We will continue to give our full support to the UN to achieve a Libyan-led political solution to end the crisis in Libya."
