Arab League Summit: Saudi King highlights Palestinian issue as summit opens

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - The 30th Summit of the League of Arab States opened in Tunis on Sunday with the King of Saudi Arabia, Salmane Ben Abdelaziz, flagging the Palestinian, Golan Heights and Libyan issues as some of the most important for the Arab world.

He emphasised that the Palestinian issue is central to his concerns "until the State of Palestine gets Al-Quds (Jerusalem) as its capital".

On Syria, the Saudi King insisted on a political solution to the crisis and the need to prevent foreign intervention, arguing the return of the Golan Heights to the sovereignty of Syria is paramount. Israel seized the Golan from Syria in the 1967 war.

He underlined the importance for the Arab countries to revise the position of US President Donald Trump on the Golan Heights, calling on the international community and the United Nations to help achieve this objective.

He also affirmed the need to find a political solution to the Libyan crisis.

The Saudi King said he believes that the terrorist attack in New Zealand against Muslim worshippers was not aimed at Arab countries only.

He also pointed out that "flagrant" excesses are committed by Iran, which "supports terrorism".
