Another declaration for peace in Libya adopted in Tunis

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) – Representatives of the Libyan High Council of Tribes and Cities, who met in Tunis on Monday with President Kaïs Saied, have "unanimously" agreed to mandate the Tunisian president to sponsor a global solution to the current crisis in Libya.

According to a communiqué issued by the Tunisian presidency, the participants, who were from different Libyan social components and political class, adopted a “Declaration for peace in Libya”, which sets the target of adoption of a national reconciliation bill and holding of free and fair parliamentary, presidential and local elections.

The document advocates calling all Libyan parties to sit around the  negotiation table in a bid to reach a consensual formula to end the present crisis.

It alludes to the peace deal signed in 2015 in the Moroccan city of Skhirat, under the aegis of the United Nations, but rejected shortly after by the key man of the east, Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

In this respect, the Tunisian president pointed out that the Tunis meeting will not replace a legality by another one, but will instead strengthen the one established by a new legitimacy that expresses the will of the Libyan people.

“The Tunis initiative is not in any case against anyone. It can, on the other hand, complete other initiatives and open more promising horizons,” he insisted.

The participants said the solution cannot but be Libyan one without excluding or marginalizing any party whatever their political or intellectual affiliations or the region to which it belongs.

It proposes to work to “prepare for a Libyan consultative assembly bringing together all social and political components, to adopt a national global reconciliation bill and hold free and loyal parliamentary, presidential and local elections”.

According to the authors of the declaration, “this process aims to restore security and stability in Libya and end the bloodshed in a unified country where rights and liberties will be preserved and the full sovereignty of the Libyan government is respected”.
