Angola's Bio-fuel strategy to expand energy basis

Luanda, Angola (PANA) - Angolan Oil Minister Botelho de Vasconcelos, said here Friday the drafting of the National Strategy on Bio-fuels is to enable the country expand its energy basis, despite having other sources of energy.

De Vasconcelos, while speaking to the press on the sidelines of the workshop on the Dissemination of the National Strategy for Bio-fuels, said although the country has several sources of energy and records some growth in oil production, the executive considered diversifying the energy basis of the country and also integrating bio-fuels.

"We must seize this potential the country has in order to produce bio-fuels, given that the
country needs to produce sugar and there are advantages in the cultivation of sugarcane,
because it also takes advantage of the ethanol by-products.

According to the cabinet official, who heads the commission on bio-fuels, the strategy is part of the set of achievements the country has developed, as the programme will allow the inclusion of small farmers to sell their products to companies in the bio-fuels sector.

The meeting, expected to end Saturday, aims to disseminate and collect contributions for
the enrichment of the strategy.

He said four regional meetings will be held that will bring together the 18 provinces of the country in order for them to get in touch with the document and give their contribution.

The bio-fuels commission is chaired by the Ministry of Oil and comprises the ministries of Agriculture, Rural Development and Fisheries, Economy, Justice, and Geology and Mines and
Industry, Energy and Water and the Environment.
