American actress Bellamy Young concludes visit to Rwanda

Kigali, Rwanda (PANA) - American actress Bellamy Young on Monday called on Rwandan President Paul Kagame shortly before concluding a week-long visit to Rwanda that focused on girl empowerment.

She also visited one family of endangered Silverback Mountain gorillas at Volcanoes National Park in northern Rwanda.

CARE International, an NGO working for women empowerment, invited the actress to visit Rwanda saying that girls across Sub-Saharan Africa have long been discriminated against by society and made to believe that they are inferior or less important than boys.

Some organisations and stakeholders have come up with women empowerment programmes that are geared towards helping young girls and women have a voice in the society and achieve their full potential.

Young became famous for her role as president Melody "Mellie" Grant in the ABC drama series Scandal (2012–2018).

She is the honorary chair for the domestic violence non-profit organisation 'Helpmate' and has helped raise funds for victims of domestic violence across the globe.
