Alleged terrorist killed, another arrested in Tunisia

Tunis Tunisia (PANA) – Joint units of the Tunisian army and gendarmerie have eliminated a ‘’terrorist’’ and arrested another in a preventive operation carried out in the mountains of the regions of Kasserine, center-west of the country, the spokesperson for the Tunisian ministry of Defence, Mohamed Zaki, said on Sunday.

Armed groups have found refuge since 2012 in the mountains near the Algerian borders from where they launch attacks against the security forces or civilians.

The armed groups, affiliated to Al Qaida and Daech, are active in the mountains and in the forests located between Tunisian and Algeria, in the governorates of Jandouba, Kef and Kasserine and despite the drop in their influence after the strikes received from the security forces and the killing of most of their leaders, the ‘’terrorist’’ threat is still persisting.

About 110 alleged terrorists have been killed between 2011 and 2019 by the army in a war against these armed groups.

Altogether, 1,508 military operation were carried out between January 2018 and May 2019 against the groups in which more than 61,000 soldiers took part.
