Algerian president reaffirms support for political solution to Libyan crisis
Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - Algerian President Abdelmajid Tebboune has reaffirmed his support for the Government of National Accord (GNA) and the Libyan people for a political solution.
This was during a meeting on Wednesday evening with the chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Fayez al-Sarraj, focusing on developments in Libya and bilateral relations, a statement by the Presidential Council's Information Office said.
The statement said that Mr Tabboune also welcomed the emphasis on a political solution to the Libyan crisis and the holding of parliamentary and presidential elections as soon as possible.
On Friday, al-Sarraj, and the Speaker of Parliament based in the east, Aguila Saleh, issued two separate statements announcing an immediate ceasefire and a halt to all combat operations throughout Libya.
They called for the lifting of the blockade on oil sites and for general elections in March 2021.
Mr. al-Sarraj expressed gratitude for Algeria's continued support for Libya's security and stability, underlining "the depth of relations between the two brotherly countries".
Algeria, which is leading a mediation initiative aimed at bringing the points of view of the belligerents closer together, has offered to host a meeting between the players in the Libyan conflict.
