Algerian President discusses security, stability in Mali with MINUSMA Chief

Algiers, Algeria (PANA) - Algerian President Abdelkader Ben Salah on Thursday received Mahamat Salah Annadif, the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Mali and MINUSMA Chief, who briefed him on MINUSMA's contribution towards strengthening security and stability in the west African country.

MINUSMA is the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in Mali.

According to a statement by the Algerian presidency, President Salah hailed "the Mission's role for the implementation of the Peace and Reconciliation Agreement while ensuring the stability of Mali", affirming "the total support of Algeria's efforts in the framework of reconciliation between the Malian parties and its commitment to these efforts to lift Mali out of its crisis."

Mr. Annadif, for his part, stressed the "importance" of talks with Algerian officials towards the implementation of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali, before the Assemblies of the United Nations in September.

"We are moving, in September, to the United Nations Assemblies and it is extremely important for us to hold talks with Algerian officials on the evolution of the process of restoring peace and stability in Mali," Mr. Annadif told the press after a working session with the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Sabri Boukadoum.

"Despite the delay and criticism, the agreement remains the only choice and we pledge to continue the political process for peace and stability," he said.

Since 2015, Algeria chairs the Commission for monitoring the implementation of the African Union peace accord in Mali.

Algeria and Mali share a 1,376-km long border in a strategic oil zone in southern Algeria. This border has been facing insecurity for years because of the presence of armed groups in northern Mali.
