Algerian FM in Bamako to parley with Malian military junta

Bamako, Mali (PANA) - The Algerian Foreign Minister, Sabri Boukadoum, arrived in Bamako on Friday for talks with officials of the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP), the junta that took power on 18 August, 2020, in Mali, the Information and Press Office of the Malian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI) announced.

"Mali and Algeria are two brotherly and friendly countries. Everything that touches Mali touches Algeria," declared Mr. Boukadoum upon his arrival at the President Modibo Kéita-Sénou International Airport.

According to the MAECI, Algeria is strongly involved in the implementation of the Agreement for Peace and Reconciliation in Mali.

On Thursday, during a round table of partners and the military in Mali, Ambassador Boualem Chebihi, who chairs the Monitoring Committee of this Agreement (CSA), recalled the achievements made, adding that the socio-political crisis facing Mali “significantly reduced the activities to implement the document, especially in the absence of a government”.

However, the Algerian diplomat strongly hopes that these activities will resume shortly.

"We are already encouraged by the support for the Agreement expressed by the National Committee for the Salvation of the People," indicated Mr. Boualem Chebihi, who urged the international community as a whole to continue its support for strategic development validated by the Malian authorities.

Since August 18, 2020, soldiers under the umbrella National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP) forcefully took power, forcing ex-President Ibrahim Boubacar Kéita to resign.

Minister Boukadoum, accompanied by a large delegation, was greeted by Colonel Malick Diaw, 1st Vice-President of the CNSP, and Ambassador Boubacar Gouro Diallo, Secretary General of MAECI.
