Algerian FM, AU Commission chairman meet in Tunis

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) – The Algerian deputy Prime Minister, also minister of foreign affairs, Ramtane Lamamra, and the chairman of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, on Friday held an extended working session, where they discussed ’peace and security issues in Africa’’, as well as ‘’the latest developments of the regional and international situation’’, particularly the meeting on Libya.

The session was attended by Ambassador Smail Chergui, the AU peace and security commissioner.

The working session was held on the sidelines of the meeting of Arab foreign affairs ministers, which precedes Sunday’s Arab summit.

Mr Lamamra reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to support efforts made by the African Union to find political solutions to the situation in Mali and the Sahel, through dialogue.

The two officials evaluated the roundtable on the Western Saharan issue, held recently in the Swiss capital, Geneva, under the aegis of the United-Nations, to strengthen cooperation between the African Union and the United nations and achieve a consensus between the two belligerents, Morocco and the Polisario Front.

They examined the Arab-African relationship and ways to enhance the ties and preparations for the Arab-African summit to be held later this year in the Saudi Arabia capital, Riyadh.

The two officials also stressed the importance of coordination at the African level to take up the challenges facing African countries, including the fight against terrorism, organized crime and illegal migration to tighten security and restore stability on the continent.
