Algeria wants international community to impose respect of peace in Libya

Algiers, Algeria (PANA)  -  Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune Monday called on the international community and the UN Security Council, in particular, to “assume their responsibilities to impose the respect of peace and security in Libya", an official statement by the Algerian news agency (APS), said here.

President Tebboune made the call when he granted audience to the chairman of the presidential council of the Libyan government of national accord (GNA), Fayez Serraj.

The statement by the Algerian presidency said "President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during his meeting with president Fayez Serraj reaffirmed his appeal to the international community and particularly the UN Security Council to take up their responsibilities to impose the respect of peace and security in Libya".

The Algerian president also insisted on the need for “foreign parties to stop promoting the escalation and providing belligerent parties their military, material and human support and pleaded for the respect of international legality in a bid to facilitate the resumption of dialogue to reach political solution to the crisis".

"Algeria calls the international community to assume their responsibilities to impose immediate ceasefire and end the military escalation which, everyday, leaves more victims... Therefore, Algeria strongly denounces the acts of violence including the recent massacre that claimed the lives for 30 students at the Tripoli military school, a criminal act, even a war crime. Yet, Algeria considers the Libyan capital as red line not to reach", the Algerian president was quoted as saying.

The talks between President Tabboune and Sarraj were held behind closed doors before being extended to the delegations of the two countries.

The meeting that was held following the aggravation of the security situation in Libya, enabled “the two presidents to share views on the appropriate ways and means to accelerate the restoration of peace, security and stability in this fellow country", added the statement.

It stressed that the talks provided an opportunity for the Algerian leader to reiterate "Algeria’s constant position to the Libyan crisis, a position that is essentially based on the principle of non-interference in the home affairs of countries".

The Algerian president reaffirmed the need "to find political solution to the crisis that guarantees Libya’s unity, its people and its territory, as well as its national sovereignty, far from any foreign interference".

The Algerian president also reaffirmed his attachment “to preserve the region from any foreign interference, seeing the threats that hang over the interests of the peoples of the region, on the unity of their governments and on security and peace in the region and the world".

"Algeria, which has always insisted on dialogue rather than the use of force, once again urges the Libyan brothers to show common sense and use the path of dialogue, far from any foreign interference, to reach a solution approved by the Libyan people, a solution that reassures the country security, stability and prosperity," added the statement.

Fayez Sarraj expressed "his thanks to Algeria for its constant fraternal positions with regard to the Libyan crisis, reaffirming his full confidence in the efforts the country is making to reduce the escalation, by backing the political solution".
