Algeria to negotiate preferential trade agreement with ECOWAS - Trade minister
Algiers, Algeria (PANA) - Algeria will soon start negotiations with the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to sign a preferential trade agreement between the two parties, the Algerian trade minister, Saïd Djellab, has announced.
Speaking on Wednesday at the closing ceremony of the Algerian trade fair, Mr. Djellab stated such an agreement would facilitate the entry of Algerian products into ECOWAS member countries with a population of 300 million.
He said that Algeria started negotiations with Mauritania for a preferential agreement during a special fair on Algerian products in October in Mauritania, stating that his country, in the second phase, will start negotiations with central and southern Africa countries.
Mr. Djellab said that studies had confirmed that Africa would in future be the most promising market in the world but intra-African trade was not more than 11 per cent.
He said this new orientation would be shown by Algeria's decision to attend 29 economic fairs in Africa out of 53 scheduled for 2019-2020.
Mr. Djellab said that Algeria would focus on its exports including food, electronics, home appliances, petrochemical and oil derivatives.
