Algeria expresses concern about latest political, military developments in Libya

Algiers, Algeria (PANA) - Algeria has expressed concern at the never-ending political and military crisis in Libya and called for an inclusive and lasting political solution through dialogue.

A government statement issued on Thursday by the Foreign Ministry said it was following with great concern the latest developments in Libya, in light of the escalation of positions between the warring parties.

It reiterated its position based on respect for the free will of the Libyan people and the relevant decisions of the Security Council.

"Algeria, by reiterating its call for an inclusive and lasting political solution through a unifying intra-Libyan dialogue, far from any foreign interference, whatever its form and origin, urges the Libyan protagonists to use wisdom and dialogue to end hostilities in this neighbouring and brotherly country," the statement said.

"Algeria also renews its support for the Libyan people at this sensitive stage of its history and its support for its aspirations for security, stability, development and cooperation with all its neighbours."

Libya is experiencing a political and military crisis between the internationally recognised Government of National Accord (GNA) and a rival government in the east of the country supported by the House of Representatives and Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Marshal Khalifa Haftar, since the fall of Muammar Gaddafi's regime in 2011.

The LNA announced on Wednesday evening that it would stop military operations during the month of Ramadan, the month of fasting for Muslims.

But the Presidential Council of the GNA) has expressed its mistrust at the this proclamation saying that ensuring the establishment of a ceasefire requires international mechanisms and guarantees in the framework of the talks of the 5 + 5 Dialogue Committee under the auspices of the United Nations.

In a press statement, the Presidential Council stressed on Thursday that "any operation of ceasefire, surveillance of violations and breach of a real truce, requires international sponsorship, guarantees and mechanisms for research thanks to the activation of the work of the 5 + 5 Military Committee supervised by the support mission in Libya".

Haftar has rejected previous calls for a ceasefire and refused to sign a ceasefire agreement in Moscow, just before the Berlin Conference early this year.

Earlier this week, he announced the abandonment of the political agreement signed in 2015 in Skhirat in Morocco, claiming that he had received a mandate from the citizens of Libya to lead the country.
