AI exposes dangers faced by rights defenders in Mauritania

Banjul, Gambia (PANA) – Amnesty International (AI) has, in a new report, exposed dangers of speaking out against discrimination and slavery in Mauritania.

In a statement made available to PANA in Banjul on Saturday, AI said it would launch the report on 22 March exposing the dangers faced by human rights defenders who speak out against slavery and discrimination in Mauritania.

The report, 'A sword hanging over our heads', tells of the repression of activists speaking out against discrimination and slavery in Mauritania. It will be launched at a press conference in Dakar, Senegal.

It also highlights how authorities are deploying a range of repressive tactics against them, including bans on the organizations they represent, arbitrary arrests, torture, vicious smear campaigns, assaults and death threats.
