African presidents expected in Lomé for summit on counterfeit drugs

Lomé, Togo (PANA) - African heads of state are expected here Friday to attend the summit on counterfeit drugs, official sources told PANA here Thursday.

President Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo-Brazzaville, President Mahamadou Issoufou of Niger, President Nana Akufo-Addo of Ghana, President Adama Barrow of Gambia, President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda, and President Macky Sall of Senegal are all expected around the Togolese president, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbé, host of the summit.

According to the programme sent to the media on Thursday in Lomé, Saturday will be the most important day of the summit, with the signing of a framework agreement and the political declaration, address by the the chairman of the Brazzaville Foundation, Jean-Yves Ollivier, and the closing address of President Faure Gnassingbé.

On Friday, dinner will be held for the heads of state during which several distinguished guests, particularly those from the World Health Organisation (WHO), UNICEF and other organisations working to end the trafficking on counterfeit drugs will make speeches.

The Lomé summit on counterfeit drugs, due for 17-18 January is being organised by the Brazzaville Foundation with the help of WHO.

According to figures released to the media, the market of counterfeit drugs or low quality medicines represents 10 to 15 percent of the world pharmaceutical market or 200 billion US dollars.
