African Union mourns Mugabe, the symbol of Pan Africanism

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA)   -   The African Union Friday mourned the late former Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe as the "emblem of Pan-Africanism".

The former Zimbabwean President died on Friday at the age of 95 years, nearly two years after he was pushed out of power.

AU Commission Chairperson Moussa Faki Mahamat said the former president was an "iconic liberation fighter".

The AUC said the Chairperson learnt with immense sadness the passing of Zimbabwe's former president Robert Mugabe.

"The African Union is united in grief as we mourn an iconic liberation fighter and emblematic Pan-Africanist in the struggle for liberation and continental integration," the AU said.

On behalf of the entire African Union family, the Chairperson wishes to express his sincere condolences to the late former president Mugabe's family and the Zimbabwean people. The former Zimbabwean President's belief in the African Union was so solid that he was remembered as one of its leaders who never missed a single Summit of its heads of state and Government Assembly.

Kenya and South Sudan declared national mourning for the late Zimbabwean leader.

President Uhuru Kenyatta issued a Special Executive order declaring the Kenyan national flag to fly at half-mast for two days to mourn Mugabe.
