African Union lifts suspension of Sudan in its activities

Khartoum, Sudan (PANA) - The African Union (AU) on Friday said it has lifted the suspension of the Sudan from participating in the union’s activities, apparently because Khartoum has observed the principles of forming a civilian government to run the country.

The Peace and Security Council of the African Union tweeted that in a meeting it held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, that a decision was taken to restore Sudan’s active participation in the Union's activities.

AU Peace and Security Council, at its 875th Meeting on Friday, decided to lift the suspension of Sudan in the activities of the African Union, now that Sudan established a civilian-led Government”, the AU tweeted on Friday.

The African Union said it also “commits to support its reconstruction and  international mobilization effort".

On Thursday, Sudan’s new prime minister, Dr Abdullah Hamdouk, announced his cabinet of 18 members, including four ladies, to be sworn in on Sunday. This is the first civilian-led government in over 30 years, that came after the demise of long-time ruling president, Omar Bashir, when a popular revolution made the country ungovernable and the army announced the end of Bashir rule 1989-2019.

The African Union shortly afterwards gave Sudan two months time to form a civilian-led government or risk being secluded from participation in any African Union activities.

The AU's Peace and Security Department said in June that Sudan's participation in all AU activities would be suspended with immediate effect until the effective establishment of a civilian-led transitional authority.
