About 1,000 modern homes to be built in Benin's lakeside town of Ganvié

Cotonou, Benin (PANA) - The Benin government is planning to build 1,000 modern homes in Ganvié, a lakeside town in the south of the country, as part of the “Reinventing the lakeside town of Ganvié” project, according to a decision by the Council of Ministers.

The traditional dwellings in Ganvié, while ingenious, face major challenges such as dilapidated structures, fragile roofs, the risk of collapse and increased vulnerability to natural disasters, according to a government assessment.

To overcome these difficulties and provide a better living environment for the local population, the “Reinventing the lakeside town of Ganvié” project envisages, in the first phase, the construction of 250 lakeside dwellings, with an eventual target of 1,000 units.

In order to define the appropriate materials and construction methods to ensure the durability of the facilities, prototypes of the housing model are to be produced, which will enable the appropriate approach to improving the built environment to be identified and made accessible to the indigenous communities.
