AU supports Libya's candidacy for UN Human Rights Council

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The Executive Council of the African Union (AU) has approved the candidacy of Libya to the United Nations Human Rights Council for the 2020-2022 period, a communiqué from the Libyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Wednesday.

"Libya's candidacy is a fundamental and important step to succeed in being elected to the Human Rights Council at the UN general assembly in October 2019," said the communiqué issued by the information office of the Libyan Foreign ministry.

The support from the African Union took place on the margins of the 32nd ordinary Summit held from 10 to 11 February in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, which called for a national reconciliation conference in Libya in July and elections in October 2019.

The UN Human Rights Council is an intergovernmental body that supports and promotes human rights in the world.

It is responsible for dealing with and formulating recommendations on cases of human rights violations.

The Council, which was created on 15 March 2006, meets at the United Nations office in Geneva and comprises 47 member states, elected by the United Nations general assembly.
