AU intends to send observers to monitor Libyan ceasefire

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The African Union, in collaboration with the United Nations, plans to send observers to monitor compliance with the ceasefire in Libya, well informed sources told PANA on Friday in Addis Ababa.

The proposal will be made at the African summit on Saturday in Addis Ababa when discussing the Libyan crisis in the presence of the UN Secretary-General, the same sources said.

The AU proposal comes in the aftermath of the Geneva negotiations between the two parties to the conflict in Libya who have agreed to transform the truce into "a permanent cease-fire", although the conditions have yet to be determined.

The Peace and Security Commission of the AU is due to meet on Saturday in Addis Ababa to find an appropriate African approach to help achieve a cease-fire, respect for arms embargo and the cessation of foreign interference in Libya.

The President of the Libyan Presidential Council, Fayez Al-Sarraj, will join 15 Heads of State who are members of the Peace and Security Commission, the UN Secretary-General, and the Chairman of the High-Level Committee of the African Union on Libya,  Congolese President Denis Sassou-Nguesso, at Saturday's session.

Three other presidents were invited to take part in the Summit which will also look at the interconnection between the Libyan crisis and the Sahel crisis. These are the Presidents of Burkina Faso, South Africa and Niger as well as the President in office of ECOWAS.
