AU calls on warring parties in Sudan to declare humanitarian ceasefire

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - Warring Sudanese parties should declare a humanitarian ceasefire during the Muslim Holy month of Ramadan to help avert famine in their country, the African Union Commission said on Friday.

In a Communiqué, the Chairperson of the African Union Commission Moussa Faki called on Sudan's belligerent parties to observe a ceasefire during Ramadan to facilitate the delivery of much needed humanitarian assistance.

"The Chairperson urges all the parties to shoulder their responsibilities to prevent the serious risk of famine and other humanitarian catastrophes that may befall the people of Sudan and their neighbours," Ebba Kalondo, Spokesperson of the AU Commission Chairperson said in the Communique.

The Sudanese belligerent parties have shown a willingness to engage into deeper talks in Libya to find a solution to the crisis facing their country.
