AU Summit ends with renewed resolve to comprehensively address refugee crisis
Addis Ababa, Ethiopia (PANA) - The African Union Assembly of Heads of State and Government ended on Monday with a pledge by African leaders to take comprehensive steps to end displacement of populations and the refugee crisis.
The African leaders also asked the UN to immediately show solidarity with African countries and provide the much-needed funds to support peace and security issues.
Addressing the closing ceremony of the Summit, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, President of the AU, said: "We achieved tangible success in our deliberations, which highlight our priorities for the year 2019."
Among those priorities is the implementation of the Contiental Free Trade Area (CFTA), the modernisation of infrastructure and plans to push for peace and security in Africa.
President Sisi said the continent resolved to prepare for the return of Internally Displaced Persons to their homes and address the comprehensive causes of population displacements.
President Sisi said the AU would prioritise institutional reforms within the AU.
He said the leaders agreed to strengthen the bases of sustainable development by working to improve on jobs for the youth.
The AU also resolved to push for a strong AU and a stronger Africa capable of tackling the crises facing the continent.
"We will also build our capacity and finance institutions to build the industrial capacity of our continent," President Sisi said.
The Summit emphasised peace and security in Africa and called for measures to involve the private sector to participate in building the future of Africa.
