AU, Senegal support Libyan elections at New York meeting

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed al-Manfi, discussed with Senegalese President Macky Sall, who is also the current Chairperson of the African Union (AU), their support for international efforts to achieve reconciliation and stability in Libya.

The efforts of the international community and the United Nations are currently being deployed to relaunch the electoral process after the postponement of last December's elections.

The political stalemate in Libya has led to the existence of two governments, which has heightened tension, leading to the multiplication of clashes between armed groups of the two rival camps.

The meeting took place on Thursday on the sidelines of the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly, according to a statement from the Libyan Presidential Council.

The same source said al-Manfi praised the strong relations between Libya and Senegal, stressing the historic and founding role of Libya in the African Union.

The Senegalese president welcomed an invitation extended to him by the chairman of the Libyan Council to visit Libya, according to the statement.

The chairman of the Libyan Presidential Council held a number of meetings this week with heads of state and government and foreign ministers attending the 77th session of the UN General Assembly to discuss the latest developments in Libya.

After delivering his speech at the UN General Assembly, the chairman accepted an invitation from US President Joe Biden to attend the annual reception organized for the occasion.

On Thursday, al-Manfi met with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas. On Wednesday, he met with the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Karim Khan, to discuss cooperation between the Court and Libya on a number of cases referred to the Court under UN Security Council resolutions.
