AU Peace and Security Council deplores the continuing crisis in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) - The African Union Peace and Security Council has expressed serious concern over the continuing crisis in Libya, denouncing outside interference in the affairs of the country.

At the end of the work of the 929th ordinary session of the Council, the participants expressed, in a declaration published on Sunday, "their deep concern at the continuation of the fighting in Libya, which has undermined the efforts to fight the Covid- 19 pandemic and also exacerbated the already unstable social and economic situation in the country, as well as the plight of migrants and asylum seekers".

Chaired by Algeria for its current session in June, the AU Security Council renewed its "firm condemnation of all forms of external interference in questions related to peace and security that undermine national sovereignty and peace efforts, stressing the need to ensure that any external support for peace and security efforts on the continent is coordinated and directed towards the achievement of the objectives and priorities of the African Union within the framework of its the program to silence firearms in Africa".

The Security and Peace Council has called for cohesion around the appeal of the President of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, which stresses "the urgent need to silence firearms in Africa".

The Council said an end must be put to conflicts to guarantee the cessation of hostilities, as well as the humanitarian commitment of all the belligerent parties to immediately stop fighting to facilitate the measures taken by the Member States and the parties, humanitarian actors active in fighting and eradicating the Coronavirus, in response to the appeal by the United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, for an immediate global ceasefire to pave the way for countries affected by conflict to focus their efforts on fighting the Covid-19 epidemic.

The health crisis on the continent has postponed the efforts of the African Union to organize a national reconciliation conference which was to bring together the Libyans in July in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
