AFRICOM evacuates troops in Libya because of security situation

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – The US military commandment for Africa (AFRICOM) on Sunday announced the evacuation of its troops operating in Libya because of the deterioration of the security situation in that country.

In a communiqué issued on its official website, AFRICOM said: “Because of the worsening deterioration of the security situation in Libya, a US support team to the commandment was provisionally evacuated from the country because of the circumstances on the ground,” without précising the destination of the evacuated troops.

The role of AFRICOM in Libya is to track down ‘terrorists’ and to support the diplomatic missions in the country while strengthening cooperation and improving the security situation on the ground, added the communiqué.

“The security situation on the ground is developing in a confused way and one cannot prevent what will happen,” said General Thomas Waldhauser, AFRICOM chief, adding: “We will remain vigilant to support the current US strategy.”
