8th AU Committee summit: Algeria volunteers to host national reconciliation conference in Libya

Tripoli, Libya (PANA)  - The African Union high level committee on Libya announced at its meeting hosted in the Congolese capital, Brazzaville, Thursday that Algeria had offered to host a “national reconciliation conference” between the two parties in conflict in Libya.

A statement issued at the closing session of the AU Committee on the Libyan crisis said the committee “took note of Algeria’s offer to host a national reconciliation conference".

Algerian President Abdelmajid Tabboune announced during the international Berlin conference on Libya held on 19 January a mediation initiative between the Libyan belligerents aiming to offer a Libyan-Libyan solution to the crisis.

The 32nd African Union ordinary summit in February 2019 in the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, marked a decisive point in the strategy of the continental organisation for its strong participation in the Libyan affair.

The summit initiated an action plan resulting in moves toward a solution in Libya, including the holding of a national reconciliation conference in Libya, which was expected in July but was postponed because of the present escalation with the military offensive against Tripoli, as well as elections in October 2019.

In his speech at the inaugural session of the 8th Summit of the AU high level committee, the chairman of the presidential council of the government of national accord, Fayez Al-Sarraj, expressed the hope that the African Union would play a key role that could contribute actively to finding a solution to the Libyan crisis.

He suggested the appointment of an African special envoy in Libya, who will coordinate the road map for solution so that the weight of Africa was actively and strongly felt.

He expressed the hope that such a proposal would receive a collective approval.

The 8th AU high level committee on Libya opened on Thursday in the Congolese capital, Brazzaville, with the participation of a certain number of heads of state and government and representatives of regional and international organisations to discuss a political solution to the Libyan crisis.

The Brazzaville summit precedes the African Union Summit to be hosted in the Ethiopian capital, Brazzaville, on 9 February.
