3 killed, including two foreign workers, in Tripoli bombardments

Tripoli, Libya (PANA) – Three persons, two of them members of the foreign workforce in Libya, were killed as the bombing of some Tripoli districts continued on Monday.

The third victim is a Libyan woman.

Reports say that the bombing continued despite the acceptance by parties to the Libyan conflict of a humanitarian truce in place of efforts to fight against coronavirus.

In a publication, the operation "Volcano of anger" of the Government of National Accord (GNA) on Monday evening announced the death of two foreign workers during a bombardment of an artillery at the crossroad of Maitigua, eastern suburb of Tripoli.

The bombardment also wounded a civilian and damaged vehicles and goods belonging to civilians in the zone, according to the statement.

In another development, a spokesperson for the ministry of Health of the Government of National Accord, Al-Amine Al-Hachemi, announced the death of a Libyan citizen, aged 20, Samar Abdelalil Al-Charidi, after a bomb fell on a house in Khallet Al-Nour in Aïn Zara, southern Tripoli.

According to Mr Al-Hachemi, the rescue and emergency services extracted the body of the victims under the debris of her house.

Two persons were killed by a shell that dropped on their domicile in the region of Aïn Zara on Monday morning, taking the number of victims to five dead and six wounded since the proclamation of the humanitarian break, according to the governmental military operation which accuses Haftar’s forces of being behind those attacks.

On the appeal of eight countries, including the United-States and the European Union and the UN, the Libyan belligerents accepted to observe a cessation of hostilities in a bid to give the opportunity to local authorities in Libya to face the coronavirus epidemic although the country has not recorded any confirmed case of COVID-19.

The Libyan ministry of foreign affairs sent a letter to the UN Security Council asking the body to adopt firm and dissuasive attitude against Haftar’s troops who continue bombarding the Tripoli districts and targeting civilians.

In its letter, the ministry on Monday said that Haftar’s bombardments exceeded all limits by targeting the Old Media which represents historic heritage for the country, particularly its architecture and buildings.
