280 Libyan truckers stranded for one month in Tunisia return home
Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - A total of 280 Libyan truckers stranded on the Tunisian side since 20 March at the Ras Jadir border crossing were able to enter Libya on Tuesday after a month spent in difficult conditions in Tunisia, a Tunisian security source said on Wednesday.
They had earlier tried, on the same day, to force their way into Libya in order to put pressure on the Libyan authorities to look into their situation in the run-up to the month of Ramadan, the same source added.
But Tunisian security services had pushed them back to the place where they had been parked for a month, as the Libyan authorities had refused entry since the border was closed to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus (Covid-19), the source said.
The 280 truckers whose large porters are filled with different types of goods had asked the Libyan authorities to let them pass, even if they were put in health quarantine.
The Libyan truckers' protest comes a day after another protest by hundreds of Tunisians stranded for two weeks in Libya, who on Saturday tried to force the border crossing to Tunisia.
They were repatriated by the Tunisian authorities after a thorough check on each person to ensure their health, before sending them to their respective regions.
