26 Ivorian illegal migrants rescued by Tunisian Navy

Tunis, Tunisia (PANA) - Units of the Tunisian Navy, operating in the city of Monastir, have foiled an attempt by illegal migrants to migrate to the Italian coast, an official source said here Sunday.

The navy said it rescued 26 migrants, all of Ivorian nationality, including a three-year-old child and nine women, adding that it also rescued 89 other migrants, including an Egyptian and a Senegalese, with the rest coming from different regions of Tunisia.

This followed seven foiled attempts at illegal migration in the island of Kerkannah, in the south-east of the country, a Tunisian security source said.

A total of 6,485 illegal migrants have been intercepted since the beginning of the year while trying to reach Italy, the Tunisian Forum for Economic and Social Rights said in a statement on Friday.
